What We Do
Our first intervention in a dog's life happens in the pound.
Dogs in Distress work mainly to help the dogs from Ashton Pound. The areas covered by Ashton dog pound are Dublin City Council, Fingal County Council and Dun laoghaire Rathdown.
Three to four times per week volunteers from Dogs in Distress visit Ashton pound to take photos and records of all the dogs coming into the pounds care. Taking note of the each dogs temperament as well as their age and condition. This significantly helps not only to re-home dogs but also to reunite some of the dogs with their owners.
We depend on Foster families for short term care of rescued dogs while waiting for re-homing or to be moved to an offered rescue space.
Dogs in Distress save dogs from death.

Why We Do It
16, 546 dogs were put to sleep... in Ireland in 2005, these were mainly healthy dogs.
This figure is only the reported number but does not include cruelty cases, vets or other unknown deaths.
Stray dogs are kept in pounds for five days to allow owners to find them, but many are not traced by their owners within the short time given.
Surrendered dogs may have only 24 hours to be re homed. Many of these dogs are healthy, well behaved dogs.
Dogs deserve a chance in life, we aim to give it to them.
Because we know we can make difference...because we care. |

How We Help Rescue Dogs
We neuter, worm, microchip and vaccinate all of our dogs during their time in foster care. The foster home also help with toilet training, lead training and general socialisation to ensure these dogs are ready for their new life.
Many of the dogs we rescue from the pound have developed illnesses or were already ill before being brought to the pound. Veterinary care is the largest part of our expenditure. On average we spend €2000-€3000 per month. This does not include vaccinations, worming or micro chipping. This is just to deal with sick pups, adults and those needing operations.
Stray dogs have been open to the elements without proper nutrition or care so they have reduced immunity to communal diseases which they may come in contact with in the Pounds. We ensure the dogs have a good diet, warm bed, loving people who help the dog to overcome the trauma and adjust to their new lives. |

How You Can Help
We depend on animal rescues and fosterers to care for dogs we rescue from the pound. If you want to know about various rescues please check the web or your local telephone book.
Dogs in Distress aim to help as many dogs as possible but cannot save every dog that comes in to Ashton Pound.
Dogs in Distress is comprised of volunteers with limited time and resources. New fostering and homing applications take time to process and are subject to homechecks. Please be patient.
Dogs in Distress do not run Ashton Pound. The pound manager will have the final say on every dog in the pound. Please contact them directly if you have any questions.
Dogs in Distress will not take any dog it feels is unhomeable i.e. dogs that have bitten, aggressive dogs or dogs deemed to be so ill that they are beyond veterinary care.
All dogs over their time in the pound are at risk. If you can offer help please contact us. Don't assume someone else will. |
